Understanding the difference between aluminum pipes and tubes

The terms "pipe" and "tube" are often used interchangeably, but they have distinct differences, primarily in how they are measured and their intended uses:

• Pipes are defined by their internal diameter and are typically used for transporting fluids or gases, where the capacity is determined by the size of the bore. This makes the internal diameter the critical measurement for pipes. Additionally, pipes are rigid and are generally available only in straight lengths.
• Tubes are defined by their outside diameter and are often used for structural applications. Tubes can be provided in straight lengths or coils, offering more flexibility in use. Unlike pipes, which are specified by their nominal diameter (a standardized measure that does not match the actual outside diameter), tubes are measured by their actual outside diameter. 

This distinction ensures precise dimensions and tolerances, making tubes ideal for applications where exact sizing and structural integrity are crucial.
